Working in the creative industry, I’ve picked up a wide range of specialisms over the years, but I’d say my main specialism is innovative sustainable architecture, spanning from house designs to city-wide masterplans.
I’ve been influenced by so many different architects and designers, but if I were to pick some key ones, I’d say Le Corbusier, who taught me to think outside the box, Tadao Ando, who showed me the beauty of keeping things simple and Santiago Calatrava, who taught me how structure and architecture can be combined to create the truly extraordinary.
I love having a big flexible desk where I can lay out my ideas. It’s also great working in a space with other artists. We can share our thoughts and get feedback on our work. On top of that, working at SPARK means I have some of the best restaurants and bars in York right on my studio doorstep.
Gosh, where to start? Art is for so many things! Art is for expressing ideas, communicating messages and conveying cultural values. Art is for challenging social norms, provoking thought and inspiring change. Art is for telling stories, expressing emotions and even unwinding. Art is for making people happy, making people sad and even making people cry. Art is for pushing boundaries, experimentation and comprehension. In fact, some of the world’s greatest buildings were first conceived as a painting. In essence, art is whatever you want art to be.
