Zeren Ataçocuğu is currently in the first year of a PhD in Classics and Ancient History at Newcastle University. Between 2018 – 2022, she studied at Newcastle University first for a BA in Ancient History, followed by an MA in Classics and Ancient History. Zeren’s research interests focus on the Archaic and Classical Mediterranean, mainly Greece and Türkiye, and the art and iconography produced there.
In this symposium the role of women within the religious practices of Classical Athens will be explored. Religious rituals were embedded into ancient life and took place during every aspect of everyday life. For an Athenian woman in the Classical period, key milestones in her life such as coming of age, marriage, birth, and death would all be marked with religious rituals. The religious sphere was a space in ancient Athenian culture where women were allowed more freedom and responsibility that in other aspects of life, so looking at their roles in religion can provide an insight into their lived experience. Whether you’re an expert or someone who’s never encountered the ancient world before, this symposium offers the opportunity to delve into the ancient Athens and discuss the lives of the women who lived there.
For this Lecture we will be offering a selection of history themed bites themed around Ancient Greece. The price of food comes included with the ticket, only 36 tickets are available with food.
