Q&A

Knori's founders AJ Silva (son) & Napoleon Silva (father)!

How did you get the idea for your business?

My father & I initially started out by doing pop-ups in Spark selling our signature deep-fried sushi rolls and quickly realised how much we loved the vibe, the atmosphere and the people of York and everyone beyond. We were overwhelmed & grateful for all the love & support that we were shown throughout those pop-ups and that’s when the idea came to mind to put up our own business and demonstrate our culinary skills to bring the most memorable flavours to York.

What's the first thing you did to bring that idea to life?

The very first thing my father and I did was to have a sit down with family, friends & fellow business owners for advice and possibilities about establishing our own business. At first, it seemed like the most difficult task to accomplish but at the same time, it was adream worth fighting for. After all was said and done, we felt we had to just go for it to bring people the cuisine that was missing from Spark and to demonstrate the passion we have for Asian food.

What's the best part of running your own business? What's the hardest?

By far the best part about having our own food business is seeing the customers smile when they receive the food as we deliver it to them. The joy that comes from hearing compliments after people have tried our food makes our day every time and it reminds us of why we love running our own business. The hardest part of our business is trying to make sure we have all our menu items in stock that we have on the menu. Many of our foods are made from ingredients that come directly from their respective countries and it's hard to come by enough stock at times, especially during the busy periods. We hate the feeling of disappointing customers when one of our menu items is unavailable.

What would you say to someone considering starting their own business?

Never give in to any challenges that come your way! Expect difficulties, embrace them and tackle them head on to overcome the obstacles. Only then will you realise how far you have come on your journey and the accomplishments you have achieved throughout the experience.
